Correctional Healthcare Partners Begins Healthcare
Services at the Monterey County Jail
As of January 1, 2026, Correctional Healthcare Partners (CHP) is providing comprehensive healthcare services at Monterey County Jail.
CHP was selected by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office following an extensive RFP process, which also included a long-standing incumbent.
The County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of selecting CHP as the County’s new correctional healthcare services partner.
This decision reflects the County’s confidence in CHP to deliver exceptional care. We are honored by this trust and look forward to our collaboration with the County.
This transition reflects a shared commitment between CHP and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to ensure incarcerated individuals receive timely, high-quality medical care delivered with professionalism, clinical integrity, and respect for human dignity. CHP brings extensive experience in correctional healthcare, with a focus on integrated medical and mental health services, continuity of care, and close collaboration with facility leadership. CHP’s clinical teams are onsite, supporting safe, consistent, and responsive healthcare delivery within the facility.
As part of the transition, CHP hired and onboarded approximately 90 full-time employees – a 73% increase in staff – to support healthcare operations at the jail beginning day one of service.
“We are excited to collaborate with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to deliver healthcare that reflects dignity and excellence for every patient we serve,”
said Dr. Peter J. Freedland, Chief Executive Officer of CHP.
During a November 18, 2025 address to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Tina Nieto of Monterey County Sheriff’s Department underscored the importance of the agreement, describing it as “a contract that is not just operationally necessary, but legally and morally essential.”
The transition was completed in close coordination with Monterey County Jail leadership to ensure continuity of services and a smooth onboarding process for staff.
CHP’s priority remains stability, safety, and quality of care for the incarcerated population. Additional details regarding this transition are available in Monterey County Sheriff’s Office’s official announcement.
